America has a lot of treasures: The Constitution, baseball, cheeseburgers, Betty White. It’s time we added Chicken McNuggets to the list.
It's not up for a debate. I believe that Chicken McNuggets are an American treasure.
When a person thinks about “American food” the go-to picks are usually apple pie, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza, and recently buffalo wings. There’s no doubt that these foods are as AMERICA as AMERICA can get. Yet, why is it that the Chicken McNuggets are hardly mentioned? It deserves its proper place as one of America’s greatest foods and I'm going to explain why.
I’ll admit, I consider myself a health-conscious sort of chap and fast food doesn’t typically make the list of daily food options. That said, there are times where I just want to eat something good and when that time comes, I prefer Chicken McNuggets.
I must've had thousands of Chicken McNuggets over my lifetime. In fact, I can't recall regretting a single time I ate them. Rather, I've always found myself happy that I had them. McDonald's boasts that their McNuggets are crispy and airy on the outside, thick and moist on the inside, and, yep, in my experience that's 100% true. In other words, they're perfect!
It goes beyond that. It’s about what makes Chicken McNuggets so special. Despite the conspiracy that McDonald’s doesn’t actually use chicken, McDonald’s uses 100% white meat. They use chicken breast meat, rib meat, and tenderloin, then grind it up into a coarse mixture. They are then mixed with marination ingredients that work together to add moisture and enhance flavor.
The chicken comes in four familiar shapes: a ball, boot, bell, and bowtie. The boot happens to be my favorite of the bunch; which I’ll explain why a little later. It’s then breaded three times – first in a light batter, later in a breading with celery and white pepper, and lastly in a tempura batter. This last breading is what gives their McNuggets the classic crunch you hear every time you take a bite.
On pure flavor and presentation of the chicken nugget itself, no other brand comes close. When you add in McDonald’s addictive dipping sauces it takes the McNugget to a stratospheric level.
Personally, I’m a huge tangy barbecue fan that dabbles in a little sweet ‘n sour from time to time. I told you that the “boot” was my favorite shape, and the dipping sauce is the reason why. All you have to do is dip the toe in first and the rest follows. Unlike the other shapes, the “boot” fits swimmingly with the container the dipping sauces come in.
Their other flavors (creamy ranch, spicy buffalo, honey mustard) are just as iconic. All painstakingly tested, and chosen, to give us the best possible flavors and they succeeded. Other fast-food restaurants can’t even compete.
There are three important questions each of us ask ourselves (if you aren’t, start doing so). Does it look good? Does it smell good? Does it taste good? When it comes to Chicken McNuggets the answer to all three is, “Yes!”
It doesn’t matter if you’re a grandmother of six grandkids, a father of three, a young adult living the nightlife, a teenager hanging out with friends, or a child getting a happy meal. Chicken McNuggets deliver every time.
It happens to be the 40th anniversary of McDonald’s introducing the Chicken McNuggets to a worldwide audience. They were an instant hit and have kept their place on McDonald’s menu ever since. However, they haven’t broken through on the list of foods that are synonymous with America. It’s about time we correct that, don’t you agree?
