It wasn’t a decision that came quickly.

Rather, it was a decision that started when I first took pencil to paper to write for fun and it grew organically.

As a young man, I'd write short stories, create my own sports articles, and when I was in the darkest of places, I'd write my way out of it. I didn’t know it at the time, but looking back that was the beginning of my journey towards becoming a writer.

As I hit adulthood, I traded writing for fun with academic and professional writing through school. It helped me graduate Cum Laude at California State University of Northridge, with a bachelor's degree in political science, and it helped secure my teaching credential.

For over ten years, I dedicated myself to being an excellent elementary school teacher. I'd teach little ones how to read, write, and solve problems. I'd relish those “Aha!” moments on a child’s face when they finally understood a concept that had been troubling them. It was truly what kept me passionate about what I did.

I'd never have thought that it would be my own “Aha!” moment that would change the course of my life.

During the pandemic, every teacher across the world found themselves teaching online. It was a terrible method for teaching, and I was growing increasingly frustrated with it. To cope with the anxiety and stress, I started journaling my frustrations and started writing for fun again. I found that I'd been so focused on being an effective educator that I had forgotten how much I loved to write!

Once I got back into the classroom, I couldn’t stop thinking about writing. It consumed me entirely. I would come home and spend my evenings writing. I would practice writing short stories, news articles, copywriting, reviews, and sports commentary. I'd regained a love that I had lost, and this time I wasn’t going to let it go. I made the decision to put away my lesson planner for good and dedicate my life to becoming a professional writer, and I haven’t looked back.
